Options for a Criminal Background Check or Police CertificationThank you for volunteering to mentor a college student! Because we work with a vulnerable student group, as part of the application process GMI requires a criminal background check or police certification for GMI mentors.
How to get Verified:
Mentors in the United States
Option one: First Advantage Background Check
After applying to be a mentor, you will be provided with a link for a criminal background check independently conducted through First Advantage/Profile Advantage. GMI requests that you cover the $10.50 expense for completing the criminal background check. Otherwise, there is no cost to be a GMI mentor.
Option Two: Referral from Your Employer
If you are currently employed at a company that conducts background checks for all employees, an HR representative can verify that a background check was previously completed for you. An HR representative from your company must send an email to GMI. Use the template below.
Mentors Outside of the United States
We welcome mentors from around the world! You have three options to be verified and ready to work with a student:
Option One: First Advantage Background Check

I am applying to be a volunteer mentor for underserved students to help them prepare for their first job. Global Mentorship Initiative (GMI) is a nonprofit organization that provides guidance and business skills to underserved college students through online mentorship and they work with students in many locations around the world.
GMI requires a criminal background check for all mentors because they are working with students. However, they do not have a background check process established yet for my country. They offer an alternative verification that would enable me to be a mentor. They are requesting that an HR representative from my company provide confirmation that a background check has been previously completed for me.
Only confirmation is needed. They are not requesting to see the background check.

Option Three: Obtain a Police Certificate in Your Country
If your employer is unable to verify a background check. Many countries will issue a Police Certificate for this purpose. In many countries, you can apply for this online and have the certificate emailed to you. In some locations, you must apply in person at your local police department. After receiving the certificate, please forward this in email to: kristen.sahl@globalmentorship.org.
How to Obtain Your Police Certificate to be a Volunteer:
